Heene Cemetery was consecrated 150 years ago and has been closed to the public since 1973. The last burial of ashes was in 1977 meaning that there are many graves which are no longer tended by family members. Friends of Heene Cemetery are a group of reliable and dedicated volunteers who have been working together since 2015, to improve this site of species and heritage importance.

A sensitive balance of protecting, researching and sharing the heritage within the walls is only part of our work. Volunteers are encouraged to look after a small area of one or two graves and we are only open Saturday and Tuesday afternoons 2pm-4pm.

As a volunteer we ask you to only give the free time you have available.

There is no pressure just a need for us to have help with our responsibilities as a Friends of group.

Occasionally there may be a deadline but we all support each other here.

An interest in local plants and species with the ability to work at low level for short periods is preferred.

Basic introduction and training with risk assessments will be provided on arrival.

  • The tranquility and pleasure of working in this hidden haven gives a great sense of well being.
  • Social interaction and a real purpose to the tasks carried out give a boost to mental and physical health.
  • An increase in the understanding of conservation practice and gardening skills.

Practical Considerations

Kneeling, bending and walking are a major part of caring for graves but do not have to be for long periods of times. Other tasks are available and are varied throughout the session.

Foxes do live on site so gloves must be worn at all times and hands wiped before eating.

When do I need to be available?
