Brighton & Hove Arts Council (BHAC) was established in 1974 to promote the vibrant not-for-profit arts communities in Brighton & Hove and in the neighbouring towns and villages of East and West Sussex. It is a registered Charity run entirely by enthusiastic volunteers covering all arts areas including visual arts, music, drama, dance, spoken and written word. Membership is open to any not-for-profit arts organisation in and we now have almost 100 member groups.
To support members, we publish the Arts Diary four times a year where all members are able to publicise their events; 7,000 copies are widely circulated. In addition we run an annual Art Show, Drama Awards programme and a biennial Poetry competition.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Chair to lead our Board of Trustees and volunteers and support the development of not-for-profit arts. After many years’ service the current Chair plans to remain a Trustee so will be available to support the new Chair.
Skills
The Chair provides strategic leadership, ensuring effective governance and helping BHAC deliver its mission to promote and support local arts groups. The role involves chairing Board and Executive Committee meetings, supporting trustees, committee members and volunteers and being involved in BHAC Events.
The Chair also acts as an ambassador for BHAC, representing it at events and building relationships with member organisations, local authorities, cultural partners, and potential sponsors.
We are looking for someone with strong leadership and communication skills, an interest in the arts, and experience of working with a group of volunteers. This is a voluntary role and offers an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the cultural life of the area.
