Hourglass - safer ageing, stopping abuse
Hourglass is a UK-wide charity dedicated to calling time on the harm, abuse and exploitation of older people. We promote safer ageing and a fairer society for all older people, delivering a range of support services from prevention and early intervention, right through to direct support and recovery. Our dedicated staff and volunteers work together to support older people across the UK. We hear from older people themselves, as well as friends, family members, professionals and agencies who are concerned about elder abuse and safer ageing.
What you will be doing:
- Attending vibrant local events - recruitment fairs, community celebrations, local festivals and pop-up stalls to raise awareness of who we are.
- Representing the organisation with confidence and professionalism when speaking to members of the public, community groups, public services, local authority representatives and other organisations.
- You will raise awareness of Hourglass (Safer Ageing) and the support we offer.

Practical Considerations
As a Community Events, Fairs and Pop Ups Volunteer, you will play an important role in helping us deliver our outreach work. You will be home based except for event attendance.
Tasks will include:
- Attending vibrant local events such as recruitment fairs, community celebrations, local festivals and pop-up stalls to raise awareness of who we are
- Representing the organisation with confidence and professionalism when speaking to members of the public, community groups, public services, local authority representatives and other organisations.
- Raising awareness of Hourglass (Safer Ageing) Helpline and the support we offer.
- Signposting people to our services and recognising when someone may need additional help.
- Carrying out light admin tasks, such as logging interactions, updating our CRM/database system (training provided), and helping prepare for events eg, receiving events materials at home like merchandising and setting up the stall display
- Being a positive, approachable presence who helps people feel informed, supported and keen to find out more about our work
Commitment
After training is completed, volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum six months of active volunteering, including:
- 1 or 2 community events per month, and
- 1–3 hours of admin time per month.
Because community outreach depends on confirmed attendance, we ask volunteers to maintain 100% reliability for agreed event dates.

What are we looking for? You don’t need previous experience — just enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to learn. This role is ideal for someone who :
- Enjoys meeting and talking to people.
- Is confident representing a charity in public settings including fairs, festivals and pop ups.
- Can commit to attending a minimum of 1 event per month.
- Can offer 1–3 hours of admin time per month from home.
- Has their own reliable broadband connection, device (laptop, PC or tablet) and mobile phone
- Is comfortable using basic IT
- Wants to make a meaningful difference in their community and support at events near to where you live.
This role is also suited to anyone with a passion for supporting older people and you are warmly encouraged to apply.
