East Sussex has around 2000 miles of footpaths, bridleways and byways, offering access to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country, including the South Downs, the Ashdown Forest and just under 50 miles of coastline followed by the recently-opened King Charles III England Coast Path.
This is an opportunity to lead the protection of the vital footpaths and rights of way network across the county and ensure walking in the natural environment is accessible to all.
You will coordinate a team of Local Footpath Wardens and will be responsible for looking at proposals affecting the routes of paths and for developing Ramblers' response to and comments on those proposals, liaising with Ramblers' central office and other stakeholders as necessary, as well as monitoring the condition of paths and reporting any issues to the County Council.
You will also represent Ramblers' Sussex Area on rights of way issues with the local authority and at meetings and public events.
Skills
You will need to be confident but diplomatic; able to understand rights of way issues including the law relating to rights of way; be friendly and personable with the ability to influence; and good at presenting arguments in writing and in person.
Benefits
- coordinate a friendly team of like-minded volunteers and make a vital difference to access for all to the footpaths network
- develop new skills and knowledge in relation to access to urban and rural environmentsÂ
- build on your networking skills to engage with an array of different stakeholders.
Practical Considerations
You will have the flexibility to manage the time which you allocate to the role, with an average time requirement of approximately 16 hours per week.
The role holder will be a member of both the Area Executive Committee and the Area Council each of which meets 4 times a year.
Some travel within the county will be required in order to liaise with Local Footpath Wardens, look at locations where a proposed development may affect the route of a right of way, and attend meetings.
When do I need to be available?
