If you love meeting new people and want to support people affected by dementia in your area, then we may have just the volunteer role for you!

As a Group Support Volunteer, you’ll support and encourage carers of people affected by dementia to engage in activities and socialise with others in a group setting. A friendly face at the group, you’ll welcome and talk to people affected by dementia to help them feel comfortable and make sure they’re offered refreshments. You’ll also help set up the room and tidy away at the end of the group.

Your involvement in this role will ensure carers of people affected by dementia are able to meet others in a similar situation, access the support and information they need and enjoy meaningful activities.

Our Peer Support Group for carers meets in the centre of Brighton once per month on the second Thursday between 10.00 and 13.00. We currently meet in the Friends Meeting House, Ship Street, Brighton.

Benefits

  • Travel expenses will be reimbursed
  • There will be the opportunity to both utilise your existing skills and to learn and develop new ones
  • The time you give as a volunteer can make a direct and meaningful difference for people affected by dementia.

Practical Considerations

The venue is easily accessible by bus routes but parking is limited.

There is also an opportunity to support with a virtual group held in the evening once per month.

Support Disabled

Because of the nature of support required by the volunteer and the venue in which the activity is located, there would need to be a thorough risk assessment for any applicants with additional support needs.

Skills

You’ll be great for the role if:

  • You have good verbal communication and listening skills
  • You enjoy meeting new people and being part of a team
  • You are aware of or are willing to learn about dementia and its impact on people
  • You can demonstrate empathy and compassion
  • You are over the age of 18.
