Mentoring and Reading with Refugee or Additional Needs Students
Sutton District Training
We are a small independent Further Education College in Woodingdean, supporting around 50 students aged between 16-19. We have refugee students learning English along with other classes of students with additional learning needs- all benefitting from our calm and caring environment. We offer employability skills for the students and lots of enrichments such as cooking, gardening and local trips.
Come and get involved with supporting young people in your community! Volunteering opportunities with our students will be a lot of fun, with no two sessions the same. You could choose to read with and mentor a 16+ young refugee, helping them to understand English and the UK. Or, you could mentor a student with additional learning needs, supporting them with career aspirations and self-confidence. Travel costs and lunch included. Time commitment of a couple of hours, once a week.
Enthusiasm and kindness!
Reasonable spoken and written English, fluency in other languages always useful too.
We are looking for adults of of all ages, and would love to meet some mature volunteers, prepared to be positive role models to our young people.
Have a life changing positive impact on a young person, by giving them 121 support and attention. Meet new people and enjoy our caring and supportive environment.
Travel expenses (bus fare) and lunch included.
If you are keen to develop your own teaching and mentoring skills, we can provide access to regular feedback/help about how to best support your young person. Be first in line to be considered for any future Teaching Assistant roles at the college.
