Join our Trustee Board, supporting the work of the Chair and CEO to relive the distress and suffering of people, with a particular focus on women and children, who have suffered or are exposed to domestic abuse.
We are the leading charity in West Sussex providing refuge, support and education through our safe houses, self contained accommodation, support programmes including the Freedom Programme and our education programmes delivered in schools throughout the county. We have a dedicated staff team to deliver our services and a range of stakeholders who fund our work either through contracts or grants.
The Trustee Board is responsible for the overall governance and probity of the organisation and for ensuring a good reputation is maintained and enhanced through everything we do.
Can you bring experience of safeguarding and social policy to provide oversight and work with the Board and leadership to ensure that our organisations safeguarding systems and practice are as robust as possible.
We are happy to train up first time trustees so if you haven't been a trustee before, don't let this stop you from applying!
The current Trustee is stepping down due to having completed three terms - the maximum time allowed. You will therefore be coming into a well looked after system and we will ensure a robust handover period. Any support will be provided.
Skills
We are looking for someone who has the time and energy to commit to Safe in Sussex and experience of safeguarding and social policy, who in addition can support our ambition through:
- Experience of leading, managing or advising on statutory Safeguarding processes of Child Protection or Adult Safeguarding or ideally both.
- Experience of working and advocating for children, young people, 'vulnerable adults' and/or people who have experienced abuse and trauma with a strong understanding of the needs of these client groups.
- Experience of matters relating to Health and Safety in the workplace, employers duty of care, risk assessment and management is desirable.
- Understanding of what 'Safeguarding' means for the governance of an organisation in a wider sense - including relevant statutory duties and processes.

Practical Considerations
We do need you to commit to a minimum of one term and be sure that you are able to dedicate the time required to trustee functions. The role will mainly be based from home, with requirements to attend Board meetings.
