School reader volunteers needed in West Sussex

Schoolreaders is a national child literacy charity that recruits volunteers to go into local primary schools to listen to children read. We are calling out for more volunteers across the county and the surrounding areas. If you can spare just an hour a week, you could change a child’s life story.

Volunteers visit their matched school once a week for an hour or two during the school day where they work individually with children to help improve their reading ability, their comprehension and also their enjoyment of reading.

Practical Considerations

• Volunteering during school hours to be agreed with school.
• Schools will provide information about parking etc once a volunteer is matched with a school.
• DBS process to be undertaken by school that volunteer is matched with.

Support Disabled

Schools will support any adaptations needed to support volunteers with additional support needs and/or disabilities.

Skills

Volunteers need to be over 18, have good written and spoken English and enjoy spending time with children. They do not need to have any specific skills or prior experience but will need to have a DBS check carried out, at no cost to themselves. They need to commit to staying at their school for a full year but holidays can be taken during this time.
