Sunday volunteer gardening

Nurture Through Nature

Register your Interest

Nurture Through Nature grows produce for food banks on allotment plots in Moulsecoomb. We are trialling weekend gardening sessions fortnightly from 2 March for people who can't volunteer in the week.

  • You will be sowing seeds, weeding, planting potatoes, making compost, watering and maintaining the plots and sheds. No experience is necessary, we will show you what to do.
  • We provide hot drinks and we have a compost toilet.
  • We work in groups of up to 9 people. Sessions are from 10 am to 2 pm.
  • We offer flexible volunteering. You don't need to commit to a certain number of sessions so it's useful for people managing a health condition, with a varying workload or personal or caring responsibilities.

Skills

You don't need any experience or specific skills as we will show you what to do but we are just as happy if you are a horticultural genius. Sessions are organized by Nick, who is an experienced and qualified gardener.

Our allotment plots are on the Natal Road Moulsecoomb Allotments on the lower slopes of a hill and the ground is uneven. So you do need a reasonable level of mobility and fitness and we are not wheelchair accessible. We will give you tasks that suit you so we ask about any health issues on registration.

Benefits

  • Meet new people and spend time doing something purposeful with a small friendly group.
  • Get some fresh air and exercise away from your phone, laptop, tv or kitchen sink. Allotments are peaceful places full of natural beauty.
  • Give back to your community. Without our volunteers growing the veg, food bank parcels may contain only packets and tins.

Practical Considerations

We are at Moulsecoomb Allotments on Natal Road. This is just off the Lewes Road behind University of Brighton Mithras House. There is very limited parking in the nearby streets but there are many buses running along the Lewes Road and we are 10 minutes walk from the nearest bus stop.

Bring your own lunch and snacks.

Wear suitable footwear (no open toed shoes) and weatherproof clothes.

It's important to arrive on time as access to the site is through the main allotment gates which must always be locked. ( Allotments are lovely but open access leads to fly tipping, stealing tools and food, vandalism etc)
