Turning Tides has been supporting homeless & insecurely housed people in Worthing & the surrounding areas for over 30 years. The Organisation has grown considerably and now offers services across other areas of West Sussex including Horsham, Mid Sussex & Littlehampton. During the last financial year we worked with 978 clients across all our Projects. We have a highly committed and effective volunteer community of around 200 people and 171 paid staff. Our mission is to end local homelessness – putting clients & our Community at the heart of our mission.
We provide a range of high & low support housing and are in the process of registering as a housing association. The voluntary Trustee role has various responsibilities such as governing the affairs of the Organisation and ensuring it is financially sound. Within the current year a number of our existing Trustees will reach the end of their term. We are seeking to recruit new Trustees to address emerging skill gaps on the Board.
Benefits
- Play a pivotal role in governing the affairs of our charity and contributing to shaping our future.
- Experience within the homelessness sector.
- Opportunity to help end local homelessness.
Practical Considerations
Overview of Trustee’s Time and Commitment :
- Attend the six general meetings of the Board of Trustees held each year
- read papers in advance of meetings, and plan to speak to them at the meeting
- follow through Board decisions which are within their sphere of influence
- take part in the work of sub-committees and working groups and form a link with workers on areas of work, reporting to the Board as appropriate
- attend any Extraordinary General Meetings
- carry out regular monitoring visits to each project and area of work, including contact with both client and staff members
- it is occasionally required of Trustees they join in administrative activities, e.g. contributing to draft policy papers or information packs and other literature, the appointment of senior workers, helping with appeals and fundraising. In order to develop a working knowledge of Turning Tides, Trustees should establish links and stay connected through regular visits to Turning Tides projects.
We need to ensure you are eligible to volunteer in the UK.
To do this we will ask to see documentation which proves your right to volunteer in the UK. If you are unable to provide this documentation, you will be unable to volunteer. If you have the right to work in the UK on a permanent basis you are also normally allowed to volunteer. If in doubt, please contact the Home Office.
All roles at Turning Tides require two character references.
These references do not need to be employment references; however, we cannot accept references from family members.
