Brighton & Hove Independent Mediation Service (BHIMS)
Brighton and Hove Independent Mediation Service (BHIMS) is a charity that has been working to reduce conflict in the community of Brighton and Hove for over thirty years. We have a small paid staff who are essential to the smooth running of operations and our core work is delivered by volunteer mediators. Our main services are:
- Community mediation
- Conflict coaching
- Homelessness prevention
- Workplace mediation
- Training
We currently have a board of seven trustees and are looking to expand our number.
What you will be doing:
- Ensuring the charity is carrying out its purpose, and that all resources and funds are used only in furthering its charitable objective.
- Jointly involved in the responsibilities, decision making and future direction of the charity.
- Preparing for and attending committee/board meetings. Contributing to board discussions.
Skills
Previous or current trustee board experience is not essential - we are looking for someone who:
- Can bring different perspectives, skills and ideas
- Has an interest in mediation and conflict resolution services
- Wants to support the local community
- Seeks to collaborate, contribute to trustee meetings in a team, around 6 a year
- Shares our vision and values
- Can use independent judgement
- Is willing and able to understand and accept the responsibilities of being a trustee
- Has a strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion

Practical Considerations
Venue for board meetings varies but is usually either
the BHIMS office at Ecclesden, Grove Hill, Brighton or Eagle Labs at Preston
Circus.
When do I need to be available?
Details | We are looking for someone who is able to attend in-person and/or online bi-monthly meetings and our AGM,but we can be flexible. There will be some time needed between meetings to conduct trustee-related activities at approximately 3 hours per month. |
