Following a one-year delivery review, The Trust is now looking to increase the numbers and broaden the voices and experience of those who make up the Board of Trustees. We would ideally recruit a further two Trustees to join us.
We are particularly looking for a Trustee who has financial skills and experience and/or an interest in figures. You do not have to be an accountant, but we are particularly looking to recruit a Trustee for the post of Treasurer within the Charity. Equally we would value having a Trustee who has experience of or a willingness to try to apply for funding for further our charity.
We also recognise that the Trustee board would benefit from further lived experience of and a voice about mental health and trauma which would enrich and add to the Trustees’ conversations. Similarly the Board would like to be more inclusive of the voices from underrepresented racial and cultural communities.
Benefits
- Being an SMTT Trustee gives a volunteer the chance to be involved in a charity that can really change lives
- Being an SMTT Trustee gives a volunteer the chance contribute to the development and running of a charity that provides opportunities for healing to those who have experienced adversity
- Being an SMTT Trustees gives a volunteer the chance to see the impact and difference that access to quality therapeutic opportunities makes to individuals, their families and their connection to and place in their community.
Practical Considerations
All voluntary Trustee roles are home based and our charity administrator works from home. SMTT does not deliver direct services itself and does not have a base to which Trustees would need to travel. Nearly all meetings are held online and mostly take place Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am and 5pm. Once a year the Trustees hold an in person meeting which takes place near Midhurst in West Sussex, so travel to this venue would need to be considered.
Potential Trustees would need to have access to their own laptop or computer and be willing to have an SMTT email account and access to our IT systems installed on their equipment. Potential Trustees should have confidence in the security and confidentiality of their IT in order to sustain our data protection rules and procedures, managing the information of applicants securely and with respect. Confidentiality also applies to spoken conversations and discussions about individual circumstances.
Support Disabled
The charity administrator would have some capacity to offer support to Trustees but there is very little in person contact in the running of the charity. The IT/remote nature of the role would be suitable for some disabled people and people with additional support needs. It would be important for each person to consider their needs and whether the required support could be provided in a manner that enabled the Trustee to feel rewarded and valued in their role and make the purposeful contribution to the charity that is required of them. Individual discussions around this could be helpful and meaningful to decision making on the part of applicantsSkills
Each Trustee who sits on the SMTT board brings skills and qualities to the role which collectively broadens and strengthens the work of the Charity, via their professional skills (what they can do) their values and behaviours (how they act) and their diversity of perspective (what they bring)
- Working together; each member adds knowledge and experience by providing:
- Commitment to and passion for the charity’s mission and values
- Understanding of (or willingness to learn) accept and implement trustee responsibilities and governance as charity leaders and employers
- Ability to think strategically, bring independence of thought to Trustee conversations and make balanced decisions
- Good communication, a willingness to challenge constructively
- Teamwork skills and a collaborative mindset
- Integrity, sound judgement, and confidentiality
- Willingness to dedicate time to meetings and preparation
- Numeracy to the extent required to understand accounts with the support of our administrator.
When do I need to be available?
| Details | Meetings mostly take place on a Friday during usual work hours but are arranged well in advance and usually around the commitments of those who need to be in attendance and involved. Frequency of meetings is regular but dates are not so forward planning is required. |
