Great opportunity to gain experience and skills in a retail environment while making new friends. Join our amazing team of volunteers and volunteer as a retail assistant in one of our Brighton branches, located on the London Road or St James's Street. 

Our charity shops raise vital funds to support and help people living with or affected by HIV.

As a Retail Assistant you would be assisting the Shop Manager in the day-to-day running of the shop:

  • Serving all customers in a polite, friendly and helpful manner both face-to-face and on the telephone.
  • Operating the electronic cash register and PDQ machine.
  • Changing till roll and PDQ roll when needed.
  • Adhering to all shop policies and procedures.
  • Sorting of donations and steaming of clothes within the H&S guidelines.
  • Clearing any rubbish as and when needed.
  • Re-stock shelves and working with 'stock rotation' system.
  • Help keep storeroom and 'serving counter' area clean and tidy at all times.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Promoting the sales of raffle tickets and all other promotions as and when necessary.
  • Undertake any other duties deemed reasonable as and when necessary.

Practical Considerations

You will have access to ongoing training, (e.g. till training, goods/clothes research and pricing training, Health and Safety, Fire Safety).

Able to commit to a regular morning/afternoon shift once a week or more.

Skills

  • Excellent customer services and communication skills.
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Basic level of spoken English required, (e.g. understanding simple instructions)
  • Ability to volunteer under pressure
  • Able to deal tactfully but assertively with challenging customer behaviour and refer to Managers where necessary
  • Aware of the value of goods/clothes
  • Able to maintain confidentiality
  • Build confidence in handling cash
