Are you passionate about making a difference in your community? Do you have experience or interest in fundraising for small charities? If so we have an exciting opportunity for you to join St Luke's Advice Service (SLAS) as a Trustee.

St Luke's Advice Service (SLAS) is a small charity based in central Brighton. We help some of the most vulnerable people in Brighton and Hove by providing practical support and advice to help them overcome financial hardship and access benefits they desperately need. Last year our small team of paid staff and volunteers helped over 800 people.

What makes us special is the time and compassion we offer each person who approaches us for help. We help people become whole again and feel connected to their community so they can overcome their financial crises and/or benefits issues and get back on with their lives.

We are a values-based organisation, and our trustees are a critical part of an organisation. We are now looking for a new volunteer trustee to help steer the organisation with its fundraising and profile raising. We will provide support and training for those without trustee experience or specific fundraising or communications expertise.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership, advice and support on SLAS's purpose, vision and core activities.
  • Approve operational strategies and policies, assuring alignment with our goals.
  • Help to secure funding to sustain our service and oversee financial plans and budgets.
  • Contribute to governance reviews and organisational development.
  • Attend Trustee meetings and actively participate in decision making.

Skills

What we are looking for:

We are particularly interested in people with a passion for fundraising/and or communications and public relations.

  • Willingness and ability to understand and accept their responsibilities and liabilities as trustees and to act in the best interests of the organisation.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member.
  • Demonstrable enthusiasm for our vision, values, mission and objectives.
  • Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion.
  • A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion
  • The ability to move easily from strategic thinking to mentoring and advising the other trustees and the Service Delivery Manager on subject specific matters, to supporting the latter with relevant operational matters.
  • Specialist knowledge relevant to the trustee role (or a willingness to learn and apply specialist skills and knowledge) - for this role we need an aptitude for and interest in one or more of fundraising, external communications and profile raising.

Benefits

  • Make a real difference in Brighton and Hove - help change people's lives for the better
  • Be part of a dynamic and fun team at St Luke's Advice Service
  • Enhance your skills and experience by sharing your skills and experiences, and learning and applying new skills and knowledge.
