The Youth Mentor is a dependable adult from the community who is matched with a young person aged 18–24 to provide consistent encouragement and guidance.

The Youth Mentor role focuses on building confidence, motivation, routine and positive relationships. Helping young people to develop self belief, resilience and readiness for work. Mentoring complements the support already provided by the young person’s Employment Advisor and is designed to reinforce progress through regular, supportive contact.

Youth Mentors will meet with their mentee for approximately one hour per week to build up confidence, provide structure, a listening ear, normalise anxieties about the workplace and be a positive figure in their lives.

This is a relationship based role that relies on establishing trust over time while maintaining clear professional boundaries.

Benefits

Becoming a Youth Mentor provides an opportunity to help change a young persons direction in life and provides support where it's needed the most.

Full training is provided which includes an induction training session which covers topics like rapport building, safeguarding and professional boundaries.

In addition you will have access to an E-Learning package and optional training pathways on topics like neurodivergence, ways into employment/training, insecure housing support, substance abuse and more.

Practical Considerations

The informal interview and subsequent training will be held virtually through Teams. Once you have completed the Induction Training, we will look to match you with a specific young person based on interests, personality and career ambitions.

Your initial meeting will be held in our Brighton Fedcap office in West Street with the team on hand to facilitate the introduction between you and your mentee. Subsequent meetings will take place in agreed public spaces out in the community where all travel expenses will be covered and there is a budget available for occasional coffees/lunches out.

Support Disabled

We are happy to consider any reasonable adjustments required for the interview/training/mentoring sessions and can look at virtual mentoring if face to face sessions aren't possible or ideal. Our Brighton Fedcap Office is disability access friendly and all suggested meeting places out in the community will be as well.

Skills

No formal qualifications are required for this role. We are primarily looking for individuals who have a genuine interest in supporting and encouraging young people.

Youth Mentors should have strong listening and communication skills, be approachable, patient and reliable. Being able to build positive, trusting relationships is at the heart of the role.

An understanding of, or willingness to learn about, the challenges and barriers young people face in accessing and sustaining employment. This may include but isn’t limited to: low confidence, lack of motivation, mental health, lack of work experience, unstable life circumstances.

When do I need to be available?
